PRESS RELEASE

The Claremont Opera House/John D. Bennett Atrium Gallery is hosting a public reception for student artists from Stevens High School on Thursday, May 11th, from 5:30 to 7 pm. Art teachers Shelly Avery and Dan Fortier worked with Christine Hawkins, coordinator of the atrium gallery, to schedule the exhibit.

“We are thrilled to have a student art show at the Opera House again and hope the students' work reinforces the importance of Art in education and life,” said Shelly Avery.  “Some believe Art to be of lesser extent than other subjects, but now more than ever, our students and ourselves need an outlet for expression.”

Fortier added, “Our students learn to explore their creativity, problem-solving, planning, reflection, and critical thinking. When our classes analyze Art, we learn to look deeper than the surface and discover other points of view and opinions and that it's normal to see things differently. I enjoy it when a student shares a perspective I had not considered.”  The skills overlap with other subjects, such as English, science, and social studies.

The teachers also shared that students find their art classes a mental relief to their day. Best of all, Art brings beauty into the world, and who couldn't use more of that?  Avery and Fortier want to acknowledge and thank the Stevens High School National Art Honor Society, who helped prepare the work for the show. The exhibit will include pieces from students in grades 9 through 12.

“It has been a number of years since Stevens High School student work was exhibited in the gallery,” said Hawkins, “and I’m delighted to have their artwork in the atrium once again. It has been a pleasure to work with both art teachers at the high school.” The exhibit will be on display until the end of May.

For the opening reception, enter the gallery via the elevator next to the Police Department main entrance. Light refreshments will be served.  For more information, please contact Christine Hawkins, COH Board of Directors christinehawkins@comcast.net.
